Child Minding Volunteer - Saint John Regional Y

Qualifications and Skills: Current and clear security clearance with vulnerable sector screening, Standard First Aid and CPR – C Training Preferred, six months experience working with children ages six weeks to 5 years via formal training (ex. child care courses) or informal training (ex. babysitting; coaching at school) recommended, flexible, energetic, creative and patient (minimum age requirement -14 years of age).


  • Supervise children in the playroom while maintaining a safe play environment
  • Assist Child Minding Staff in providing children in the centre (ages six weeks to 5 years) healthy opportunities to learn and play
  • Ensure proper registration (sign in/out) of each child in the centre, enforces two-hour time limit
  • Be positive, helpful and welcoming at all times
  • Build relationships with members and introduce them to other members, staff and volunteers
  • Use respectable language at all times
  • Be well groomed and dressed appropriately in clothing that is fitting for the positions and that will leave the best possible impression on the public
  • Accept the guidance and decisions from the Supervisor/Director as well as reporting planned or unplanned absence to the Supervisor/Director
  • Treat staff, clients and other volunteers of the YMCA of Greater Saint John with respect and dignity and be responsible in the use of the YMCA of Greater Saint John’s resources
  • Perform Volunteer responsibilities promptly, reliably and to the best of the Volunteer’s ability
  • Adhere to policies and procedures of the YMCA of Greater Saint John
  • To accept and work within the YMCA of Greater Saint John’s Guiding Principles, the Mission Statement as well as the Values of the YMCA of Greater Saint John
  • To appropriately display YMCA of Greater Saint John Volunteer identification as required
  • Participate in orientation and training programs when required


  • Be a part of the YMCA team and promote the Mission, Vision and Values of the YMCA
  • Gain experience in working with children
  • Opportunity to enhance skills as well as learn and develop new skills working with children
  • Learn about diversity at the YMCA and meet new people from all walks of life

  • Reference letter supplied with successful volunteer experience
