Gardens for Wildlife

The Gardens for Wildlife is a new program that will support Brimbank residents to create homes for native wildlife in their gardens. Renters and property owners within Brimbank can apply for a free visit from trained volunteers who will give tips to improve your garden for wildlife. The program is facilitated by Brimbank Council, with the support of dedicated and knowledgeable local volunteers known as ‘Garden Guides’. Garden guides will receive training about the elements of a habitat garden, and how to complete garden assessments.

About the Role

As a volunteer you will be responsible for the following:

  • Attending ‘Garden Guide’ training (once-off) and monthly meetings.
  • Organising and safely undertaking ‘Garden Visits (Assessment)’ at participants’ properties (in pairs)
  • During the Garden visit, discussing the ways the participants can improve their garden space to make it more wildlife friendly.
  • After the Garden visit, preparing the written ‘Garden Report’ and emailing to the participants. The report is created using a template. You will get training on how to complete the report.
  • Commit to conducting all allocated Garden Visits (as per volunteer availability and capacity).
  • Regularly communicate with Conservation Community Liaison Officer to support program, delivery and alignment with objectives.
  • Report challenges, concerns and safety incidents promptly.
  • Ensure a respectful and inclusive environment.

Volunteer hours are flexible as you will organise the Garden Visits at a time that it suitable for both you and the resident. Visits can occur in daylight hours on weekdays or weekends, depending on your availability.
