Reading Buddies – Volunteer Role

Brimbank Libraries is a dynamic library service in Melbourne’s western suburbs, delivering a range of services and programs to the community to support lifelong learning, literacy and social connection.

About the Role

Reading Buddies is a program

As a volunteer you will be responsible for the following:

  • Assist young readers by reading out loud together, helping them to improve their reading skills, comprehension, and confidence
  •  Inspire children to enjoy reading by selecting engaging and age appropriate materials, discussing stories, and making reading a fun experience
  •  Track the child’s reading progress, noting improvements in fluency and comprehension, and provide feedback to library staff
  •  Foster a supportive and non-judgemental atmosphere where children feel comfortable practising their reading skills
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude towards reading and learning, showing enthusiasm and patience during sessions
  •  Respect the privacy of the children you work with by keeping their progress and any personal information confidential

About you

Do you have a passion for language and reading?

Are you able to commit to 1 to 1 ½   hours a week during school terms to help children with skills necessary to become competent readers?

If this sounds like you, inquiry about becoming a Reading Buddies Volunteer.  

You must have:

  • Able to work with young readers at their own pace, providing encouragement and support without frustration
  • Sensitive to the needs and challenges of young readers, showing kindness and compassion in all interactions
  • Ability to explain concepts clearly, listen actively, and engage children in meaningful conversations about the books they read
  • Is a team player and able to work with library staff
  • A current Working with Children Check card is required (or willingness to apply for a free Volunteer card) and a police check. These are part of the application process and are paid by council.

Session times are:

St.Albans Library - Tuesdays from 3:30pm- 4.30pm (during school terms)

Sunshine Library - Wednesdays from 4.00pm – 5.00pm (during school terms)

Deer Park Library -Thursdays from 4.00pm – 5.00pm (during school terms)
