Animal Wellness Program - Barn Attendant

Join our Equine and Farm Animal Care Team!

We are currently looking for new volunteers, 19 years and older, to join our active team of Equine and Farm Animal Care volunteers at the Good Shepherd Barn located at 16748 50th Avenue in Surrey. This essential volunteer position provides equines and other farm animals in our care with a clean environment to aid in their recovery and keep them healthy. You must have an eye for detail, be able to easily work in a fast paced and physically demanding environment, and be able to commit to a minimum of one regular (scheduled) weekly 2 hour shift for a minumum of 4 months.

  • Cleaning stalls, paddocks and other farm animal environments
  • Cleaning water and feed buckets
  • Sweeping the barn
  • General grounds work
  • Other tasks around the farm as required

Please note that this position does NOT involve hands-on time with the animals. All animals that are housed at the BC SPCA Good Shepherd Barn come into the care of the BC SPCA through cruelty investigations and require rehabilitation, consistent handling by staff, and a low stress environment. Due to the nature of the barn, volunteers are typically not permitted to handle the animals. Other volunteer positions with more hands on time with animals may become available. All volunteers must first volunteer as a Barn Attendant prior to being considered for volunteer positions working hands on with animals. We also hope to have volunteer opportunities for youth at a future date, but do not have any positions available for anyone 18 years or younger at this time.

We are currently looking for volunteers to fill the following shifts (Monday through Sunday):

  • Morning 10:00am-12:00pm
  • Afternoon 2:00pm-4:00pm

Successful applicants are required to attend an information session.

After attending the information session, applicants interested in volunteering are required to undergo an interview, either on the phone or in person.

After the interview process, successful applicants must attend an orientation session / Barn Attendant Workshop.

Once the info session, interview and orientation session are completed, a shadow shift with an experienced volunteer or staff person will be arranged.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at surreybarnvolunteers@spca.bc.ca.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us; we look forward to meeting you soon!
