About this service

Pact Family Services provide support to families who have a loved one in prison. As part of this service, Pact run a child centred ‘family day’. The aim of these days are to give prisoners, their children and partners a chance to come together, enjoy, and share more ‘normal’ family time through the fun and engaging activities that Pact provide.


Purpose of this role


To help provide better quality contact between children and prisoners and provide a memorable and meaningful opportunity to develop bonds that are critical to sustaining relationships.


Create a relaxing environment for families where they feel safe and more able to talk to each other about their feelings.



Time commitment & location


The role will be based at HMP Huntercombe, Nuffield, Henley-on-Thames, RG9 5SB.


The family days take place once a month on a Wednesday, and where possible during school holidays.


Because of the training and induction requirements, and value of this role, Pact hope you will commit to volunteering with us for at least 6 months. 



 What you will be doing


  1.   Support the Family Engagement Manager with the design and co-ordination of the delivery of the family day.
  2.   Prepare the visit hall for the day by decorating it to support a theme or simply brighten the space.
  3.   Overseeing and supervising fun activities and games.
  4.   Encouraging prisoners to join in with their children and help make the day fun and memorable for all involved.
  5.   Supporting the prisoner to understand the purpose of the day and the importance of giving their children time and attention (as opposed to spending the whole time with their partner).
  6.   Contribute with the evaluation of the family day to support the ongoing improvement and development of Family days to ensure that they are supporting the relationship of prisoners and their children in the best way.
  7.  Attend training as identified through reviews with your line manager, both internally and externally.
  8.   Adhere to policies and practises relevant to this role: Confidentiality; Health & Safety; Child Protection and Safeguarding; Equality and Diversity; and Prison security rules etc.
  9.   Report all incidents and concerns related to Health and Safety or Safeguarding to a member of the Pact staff team.

Skills / Abilities



Experience of working with children and their families


Experience of working in a team


Experience and knowledge of safeguarding, and health and safety implications, such as lone working



Ability to deal calmly and sensitively with prisoners and families, demonstrating patience and respect


Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills


Creative and able to engage with children of all ages in play activities


Ability to work alone or in a team


Listening skills  



Non-judgemental, empathetic attitude towards prisoners and their families


Honesty and reliability


Warm and friendly approach to working with people




What we offer



Training for this role is likely to include Safeguarding, Professional Boundaries and Equality & Diversity, as well as numerous e-learning training modules available to you.



Travel costs, via public transport or private car (mileage) will be reimbursed including travel to attend training. Subsistence, i.e. lunch may also be reimbursed, according to our expenses policy.



This role is subject to:

  • 2 references
  • DBS check (Disclosure & Barring Service)
  • Security Vetting by Her Majestys Prison Service.

Please be aware that these necessary checks can take a number of weeks to process.


Support and Supervision

We will provide a full induction and regular supervision to support you in the role.
