Arts, Culture and Community Engagement

Alchemy Street Choir

The Alchemy Street Choir established by Council is an inclusive community music group that provides participants with a means of enjoyment, self-expression, comradeship and community engagement through song. Membership comprises people of all ages and backgrounds with a love of music and opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

How to join the choir

Choir membership is open to people aged 18 years of age and over living in Ipswich and surrounding areas who have an interest in singing and can access their own transport to and from the venue. We encourage people to attend a few rehearsals initially to see if the choir would be of interest to them.

Venue: Ipswich Croquet Club, 10A Milford Street, Ipswich
Rehearsals: Thursdays from 9.30am to 11.00am

Musical Director: Melissa Blacksell

Having participated in junior eisteddfods since the age of three, Melissa has been actively involved in singing, piano and music her whole life. She continues to take part in competitions, concerts, fundraisers, choirs and Christmas events to the present day. Her studies of theory, singing and piano via Australian Music Examination Board examinations were supported through her attendance (majoring in voice) at both the Queensland and Albury-Wodonga music conservatories.

Melissa has worked as a musical director for school and community choirs, along with holding executive positions in not-for-profit musical societies in Ipswich, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Operating highly regarded music studios in both Ipswich and the Gold Coast, Melissa offers tuition in voice and theoretical understanding focusing on technique in a wide range of musical genres.

Her interest in choral and solo performance assists her in capturing her passion for music and providing opportunities for others to enjoy, learn and grow. Through her musical and administrative involvement in various areas of the cultural arts, her desire is to provide a platform for socialisation, enjoyment, friendship and calmness though the joy of music and singing by leading and developing The Alchemy Street Choir.
