Community Visitor

The Community Visitor provides companionship to Home Care clients in order to alleviate loneliness and isolation. The volunteer may also help a client enjoy and participate in past hobbies and activities as deemed safe and appropriate by Home Care and Volunteer Resources.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

·      Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. Volunteers should be able to initiate conversation easily and be mature, calm, patient, friendly, supportive, and skilled listeners.

·      The ability to work independently and practice sound judgment while adhering to Home Care guidelines for interaction with clients is essential.

·      Volunteers should be reliable and punctual; completing visits on agreed upon days and times and informing clients in advance when visits need to be rescheduled.

·      Volunteers should be, as much as possible, accepting of a variety of cultures and personal life styles. The volunteer should be able to lay aside his or her own feelings, and focus on the client.

·      Past experience with seniors or persons with disabilities is considered an asset.
