Volunteers are an integral part of the RSPCA team. They play an active and vital role in helping to support our work to improve the welfare of animals and protect them from cruelty and neglect. Role Purpose |
As well as contributing to the daily operations and functionality of the Kennels, Kennels Assistants ultimately enhance the environment for dogs in the RSPCA’s care and improve their chance of finding a forever home. “I love working with the dogs as they are always so happy to see you for a walk or play. Key Responsibilities |
The Kennels Assistant will be responsible for the following activities:§ Assisting staff in the general cleaning and maintenance of kennels, including but not limited to the removal of faeces, cleaning/hosing of the dog yards, hosing and disinfecting of dog pens§ Preparation and distribution of food, refilling water bowls and toy swaps§ Changing of bedding and the restocking of bedding ready for use§ General cleaning and maintenance of the area including cleaning, sweeping, mopping, laundry, restocking supplies, cleaning toys and rubbish removal§ Distribution of environmental enrichment, food enrichment and other activities§ Exercise enrichment and socialization of appropriate dogs when required§ Adhering to Work, Health & Safety protocols to ensure the safe handling of dogs

Requirements |
To be successful in this role, the volunteer will possess the following necessary skills and attributes:§ Attention to detail and the ability to follow oral and written instructions carefully, especially safety protocols and signage§ General fitness, physical strength and the ability to safely handle untrained and/or boisterous dogs§ Experience walking dogs§ Experience with unfamiliar dogs, confidence in their presence, and an ability to observe behaviour§ Ability to be self-sufficient and work well autonomously within a team environment§ Willingness to work outdoors regardless of the weather conditions§ Preparedness to work in a noisy environment§ Willingness to assist in extra cleaning duties during peak times, as per the Supervisor/Animal Attendant’s request§ Ability to clearly communicate with a 2-way radio (training provided)§ Flexibility and willingness to assist in other RSPCA departments as required |
Training & Support Requirements |
The following training and support will be provided:§ Online induction modules including animal handling.· On the job training with Animal Attendant staff· Ongoing opportunity to discuss your role and any concerns with the supervising staff member, Animal Care Team Leader or Volunteer program Team. |
