Half Moon Bay State Beach Native Plant Nursery

Do you love getting your hands in the soil? You may enjoy working with our Native Plant Nursery team! This group focuses on propagating native plants for habitat restoration projects within San Mateo Coast State Parks. Plants are propagated from seeds, divisions and cuttings. Nursery volunteers also maintain the gardens and medians near the nursery, which mainly requires weeding of invasive plants.

Half Moon Bay State Beach Habitat Restoration

This group has weekly drop-in workdays doing a variety of habitat restoration work: weeding invasive plants, sheet mulching and at times other activities like clearing trails or small maintenance projects. They also plant native plants grown by the nursery team during the winter rainy season.

Trail Crew

These volunteers put in hard work maintaining our trails at Half Moon Bay State Beach, Montara State Beach, Butano State Park, and sometimes other State Parks along the San Mateo Coast. Trail crew work is labor intensive and may consist of weed whipping, invasive plant removal, using battery operated power tools and hand tools to clear the trails of plant and tree debris.

Snowy Plover Watch

Plover Watch volunteers identify and record information about the threatened western snowy plover on the Half Moon Bay State beaches from Linda Mar in Pacifica to Gazos Creek in Pescadero. Volunteers also assist with the multi-agency Plover Survey twice a year (winter and spring) to record snowy plover data.
