Volunteer Opportunities at Pigeon Point Light Station
Docents are a crucial part of our park! Docents are highly trained volunteers who interpret the cultural, natural and recreational features of state parks for visitors. Docents receive initial and continuing enrichment training to which they add their own unique approaches and experiences. If you have a passion for sharing history and enjoy speaking to the public, a docent position may be a good fit for you.
There are many opportunities to interact with the public
- in the historic Fog Signal Building, greet visitors from around the world and teach them about the history of Pigeon Point,
- on the Observation Deck, help visitors look for marine wildlife and enjoy stunning views of the Pacific Ocean,
- and in the Keeper’s Store, help visitors find souvenirs to commemorate their trip.
Volunteers also help with school field trips and special events, such as National Lighthouse Day and our yearly anniversary.
To show our appreciation, we host enrichment and social activities for docents. Recently, we visited Pt Sur Lighthouse and invited the Audubon Society to lead birdwatching at Pigeon Point. In addition, docents earn free State Parks parking passes after 50 hours of volunteering.
