Who: Open to adults and juveniles who are interested in providing interpretation and education about tidepools to visitors while walking on wet, uneven rocky shores.
What: The beaches of Crystal Cove State Park are part of a Marine Protected Area (MPA). MPAs are protected areas of coastline that have been identified as being important biological systems that contribute to the overall health of an ecosystem, such as our local fisheries. Part of our status of being a MPA means that visitors are not permitted to disturb the habitat of our rocky shores or to collect items from the beach as they provide habitat for animals and plants. Volunteers are instrumental in communicating this information as well as the rules and regulations of the park and ultimately help to protect and preserve our coastlines. Shifts are three hours on the weekends with a minimum of one shift a month.
Where: Crystal Cove State Park.
When: A mandatory training is held by the Orange County Marine Protected Area Council twice a year, with one training usually occurring in the fall. The position is year-round, dependent on weather conditions and seasonality.
