California Least Tern Volunteer Docent

Who: Open to adults who are interested in protecting and preserving the habitat of California Least Terns and are comfortable walking on uneven, sandy beach to perform public outreach.
What: The California Least Tern is an endangered species that nests on the sandy beaches of Huntington State Beach in the Least Tern Preserve every summer. Volunteers are responsible for interpreting California Least Terns and conduct field surveys noting bird behavior, disturbances, and predation events. Additionally they provide rules and regulations in a way that educates and encourages voluntarily compliance. Shifts are two hours with a minimum of one shift a week required.
Where: Huntington State Beach.
When: Our annual "kick off" meeting takes place in early April, a few weeks before the California Least Terns arrive to begin their breeding season. Their breeding season lasts through early August.
