California State Parks - Northern Buttes District

Campground and Park Hosts

Parks with host opportunities:  Bidwell-Sacramento River SP, Castle Crags SP, Clear Lake SP, McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial SP, Shasta SHP, and Woodson Bridge SRA.

The California State Park system has 280 incredible state parks. Their miles of breathtaking coastline, remarkable wetlands, majestic redwood forests, beautiful deserts and colorful valleys provide a diversity of parks found nowhere else in the world. Volunteer host positions are available in over 100 parks. This is a great opportunity to spend time in a wonderful location and meet fellow travelers. Campground Hosts are typically located in a campground and Park Hosts' location is in a day use area or State Historic Park.

Hosts are visible representatives in California State Parks' campgrounds and day-use areas. Hosts may perform a multitude of duties to help the park including:

  • Assisting visitors;
  • Collecting fees;
  • Performing light janitorial and maintenance duties;
  • Conducting interpretive programs, and;
  • Encouraging compliance with park rules and regulations (although hosts do not perform actual law enforcement duties).

Hosts temporarily reside in a campsite in a park unit and typically serve 20-30 hours per week. Most parks require a minimum commitment of one to three months, with a maximum stay of six months per park.

Hosts are provided with a campsite during their stay.  Many parks have full hookups and are equipped with restrooms and showers. For those who prefer a more rustic setting, there are parks with little or no hookups or commercial amenities. When applying as a host, make sure the location that interests you has the appropriate hookups for your needs.
