SPIRIT Volunteer - Supporting Individuals with Disabilities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the City of Surrey’s SPIRIT (Support Participation and Inclusion: Reach-out, Involve and Transform) Volunteer Program. 


The SPIRIT Volunteer Program aims to:

  • Increase involvement and access for individuals with disabilities in our community in recreation activities
  • Offer valuable and rewarding volunteer experience
  • Provide opportunities to cultivate personal development and education
  • Advocate and foster opportunities for inclusion for all members of our diverse community


As a volunteer in this program, you will:

  • Provide support in a group or one-to-one setting with participants with disabilities
  • Promote inclusive and welcoming environments
  • Learn how to adapt activities
  • Work collaboratively with instructors and follow directions
  • Support volunteers with disabilities to be successful in their volunteer roles

 Step #1 – Eligibility Requirements


To apply as a SPIRIT volunteer, you must be:

  • 15 years or older
  • Eligible to volunteer in Canada (check your travel documents, if applicable)


 Step #2 – Apply


  • Fill in an application
  • Attend an interview
  • Submit 2 references
  • Complete a Police Information Check


 Step #3 – Volunteer


  • When all the above steps have been completed, you will be contacted by phone or email by a SPIRIT program administrator


This process can take up to 6 weeks so we thank you for your diligence and patience. Once you are eligible to volunteer, log-in to your profile at to search and sign up for volunteer activities, confirm shifts and record your hours of service.
