English Language Learner Instructor Volunteer

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be  at least 18 years and older
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • ESL Certification
  • Excellent command of the English Language
  • Proficient in all Microsoft applications
  • Have a minimum of one year of ESL teaching experience with adults
  • Ability to teach students of all ages and from diverse backgrounds
  • Neutral English accent
  • Display patience and cultural awareness
  • Willing to complete a free background check

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct activities and lessons based on ESL teaching methodologies
  • Provide classroom instruction in the areas of basic education and career development
  • Encourage and engage students to speak in English
  • Motivate students and use humor to induce a pleasant learning environment
  • Maximize students't talk time through oral tests and presentations
  • Display excellent classroom management
  • Keep accurate records of student performance
  • Communicate with Adult Learning Department manager, as needed
  • Represent DC Public Library in a professional and courteous manner to staff and the visiting public

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Willingness to commit to at least one class per week
  • Attend training sessions and meetings as scheduled

TRAINING AND ORIENTATION

  • Attend an informational interview and orientation with a designated Adult Learning Department staff person.
  • Attend scheduled meetings for in-service training and updates to the program
