Host Family

Be a Host Family

Host Families open their homes as an expression of Christ’s compassion—living out radical hospitality by welcoming the children of families in crisis with dignity, generosity, and love. In doing so, they create space for healing, belonging, and hope during a difficult season.

As a Host Family, your home becomes more than a place of safety—it becomes a place where children are truly seen, valued, and embraced. Through simple, consistent acts of care, you help restore a sense of stability and connection. Even in a short time, your presence can have a lasting impact on a child’s life.

As a Host Family, you will:

Serve, Shelter, and Support

  • Serve children and families with compassion, reflecting Christ’s love through everyday acts of care and radical hospitality.
  • Shelter children by providing a safe, stable, and culturally sensitive home environment free from harm.
  • Support each child’s well-being by creating a sense of belonging, routine, and emotional security.

You will also:

Love, Lead, and Lift

  • Love children unconditionally, welcoming them as part of your family and helping them feel valued and at home.
  • Lead with consistency by following program guidelines and partnering closely with Family Coaches.
  • Lift children through encouragement, patience, and attentive care during a time of uncertainty.

Host Families are carefully screened and equipped to provide high-quality care. This includes police checks, references, a home assessment, and ongoing training and support. Host Families serve on a volunteer basis, motivated by a desire to make a meaningful difference.

Placements are temporary, with an average stay of approximately 2 weeks (ranging from one day to three months).

Children are referred from a wide range of community partners—including hospitals, schools, daycares, social services, shelters, treatment centres, and other local organizations—highlighting the vital role Host Families play in responding to real and urgent needs.

Mission Statement

Safe Families Canada is creating a world where children are safe, and families are together.  With over 300,000 children and youth in Canada living in vulnerable families and at risk of abuse and neglect, SFC is on a mission to transform families and ensure that no family will face a crisis alone. Volunteers, known as the Circle of Support, are motivated to practice biblical hospitality, disruptive generosity and compassion fuelled by mercy.  Host Families, Family Friends, Family Coaches and Resource Friends support families in crisis while they get back on their feet.
