Do you love animals and want to make a difference in your community? Animal Care & Pet Licensing offers three unique volunteer opportunities, each designed to help improve the lives of Calgary's pets and the people who love them:

Whether you'd like to spend time with shelter pets, open your home to an animal in need, or help promote responsible pet ownership in Calgary's parks, there's a role for you!
PAWS Pals Program
PAWS Pals volunteers help make every day a little brighter for cats and dogs waiting for their forever homes. Through play, enrichment, and lots of positive interactions, volunteers support the physical and emotional well-being of shelter pets.
This is our most popular volunteer program and often has a waitlist. Previous animal experience is an asset, but enthusiastic animal lovers willing to learn are always welcome!
PAWS Pals volunteers:
- Spend quality time with cats and dogs awaiting adoption
- Provide enrichment, exercise, and play opportunities
- Support basic obedience training for dogs
- Help animals build confidence and positive experiences
- Assist with basic grooming (qualified volunteers only)
- Take adorable photos worthy of adoption profiles
- Write creative adoption biographies that highlight each animal's unique personality
