Day Unit Driver - Wellington

The Mary Potter Hospice Day Unit provides ongoing therapeutic environment support to our patients in the community. The Day Unit implements a variety of day programme activities at our Community Bases once a week, working with patients individually or in groups. It is a place for community patients to meet others, relax, and have some fun through creative activities, games, and seasonal celebrations. The Wellington Day Unit is run on Thursdays at the Newtown Community Base.
The Volunteer Day Unit Driver provides safe transport for Hospice patients to and from the Community Base and their homes, as well as providing transportation for outings.
Key Tasks
- Drive patients to and from the Community Base Day Unit and their home
- Transfers are done using your own vehicle, unless otherwise agreed with Day Unit Coordinator
- Liaise with Day Unit Coordinator, who will provide list of required pick-ups and addresses by at least the day before shift
- Provide safe and comfortable transport while being mindful of patient’s needs
- Assist with transport for other scheduled outings
- Carefully assist patients with walkers, wheelchairs etc. when transferring to and from the vehicle, and buildings
- Inform staff of any observations or concerns noted during the journey to and from the Hospice
- Ensure your vehicle is kept clean and tidy

- Have good interpersonal and communication skills
- Have good health and physical strength to carry out the physical demands of the role
- Be able to adhere to safe manual handling practices including when handling wheelchairs and walkers and when transferring patients
- Be sensitive, tolerant and compassionate
- Acts with integrity and respects patient and family confidentiality
- Be able to ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients at all times
- Have a clean, full current driver’s licence
- Have a clean, tidy, and reliable vehicle for transporting patients
- Police Vetting is required for this role
Hours
Weekly shifts (either pickups or drop offs)
- Thursday morning pickup shift: 9:00 am – 10:00 am
- Thursday afternoon drop off shift: 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm
