City of Pleasanton Public Library: Literacy

Both new & native adult residents need help with English skills to participate fully in our society. Enjoy this meaningful and interesting volunteer job and give a priceless, life-changing gift to learners in our diverse population. Native English speakers and multi-lingual volunteers welcome.

Once trained, our one-to-one tutors are matched with a student and meet for an hour or two 1-2 times weekly at a mutually convenient time.  When you register with the program, you provide your availability and we match you with a student who has similar availability.  

Conversation group leaders conduct a 1.5 hour lesson during a weekly drop-in group English conversation practice, providing students with opportunity to practice what they are learning and ask questions about language and/or American culture. 

Qualifications for volunteers: Must be 18 years +, fluent in American English, patient, able to work with people from various backgrounds, and familiar with American culture.  New volunteers must attend a 3 hour training session and complete a fingerprint clearance.  We ask new volunteers for a six month commitment with the program.
