Volunteer Crisis Line Counselor

JOB TITLE:                    Volunteer Crisis Line Counselor

 

SUPERVISOR:                 Safe House Supervisor

 

TIME COMMITMENT:     Minimum of four hours per week

 

ABOUT THE CRISIS LINE: The Crisis Line is available 24-hours. Volunteer Crisis Line Counselors provide support, sharing of expertise, and problem solving assistance to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. The Crisis Line has multi-lines and, at times, callers need to be prioritized. There is a resource binder stocked with community contacts, guidelines, reminders, and resources for callers. Volunteer Crisis Line Counselors will provide crisis intervention counseling, advocacy, information and referral to callers.    

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:     

 

  1. Communicate and work with people in crisis, from diverse backgrounds with non-judgmental attitudes.

  2. Accurately and thoroughly document contact with crisis callers.

  3. Maintain client confidentiality as well as location of the safe house.

  4. Remain clear-headed in stressful situations and utilize resource binder and Safe House staff to assist callers.

  5. Utilize community resources and follow-up with callers, as needed.

  6. Updating and maintaining Crisis Line Resource Binder and other documents for Stand Up Placer programs.

  7. Meet agency standards in regard to professionalism, safety, and service delivery when interacting with callers, community members, and agency staff and volunteers.

  8. Other duties, as needed, between calls.

     

    REQUIREMENTS:

     

  • Training: Successful completion of 65-hours of Crisis Intervention Training, 8 hours of on-the-job training and 8 hours of yearly continuing education through Stand Up Placer.

  • Fingerprint clearance.

  • Bi-lingual and/or bi-cultural a plus.

  • Bend, stoop, twist, and reach.

  • Maintain physical and mental composure while dealing with emergencies, crisis situations, and deadlines.

  • Hear and speak well enough to converse over the phone or in person at all times.

  • Lift objects up to 25 lbs from the floor to shoulder level and carry for brief periods.

Next Crisis Intervention Training is held at Sierra College October 18-November 22, Tuesday/Thursday 6:00pm-9:00pm and Saturday 9:00am-4:00pm. If trained already, only need 8 hours of continuing education.
