About Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter:
Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter is a year-round, low-barrier shelter serving up to 175 women each night. Case management and social services are available for shelter residents and include referrals to obtain medical assistance, employment services, and more. Referrals are also available for residents dealing with substance abuse and mental health challenges. Day Program services are offered to residents Monday-Friday, 10 AM-4 PM.
Description of the position:

Volunteers will lead a Bible Study for the women who stay at Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter.

Volunteers will prepare the lessons, provide bibles and related materials, and lead the group study sessions at a time and in a space designated by the shelter’s staff.

An opportunity for women of faith to bring support and encouragement to women staying at the shelter who desire spiritual growth and who will benefit from the sisterhood of community.

Duties & Responsibilities:
-
Prepare 1-hour bible study lessons to be shared

Provide bibles and related materials
-
Lead the group bible study sessions
-
Provide a warm welcome and engaging environment for the women who participate in the bible study sessions
Qualifications:
-
Must be at least 18 years old
-
Must be able to comply with the verbal directions of the staff regarding timing and location of the bible study
Desired Skills, Experience & Characteristics:

Experience leading small group discussions
-
Experience participating in or leading bible study groups
-
Open, warm, kind, and calm manner
-
Ability to relate to women’s life experiences

Tolerant of shelter life, which can present unpredictable scheduling and behavior from residents
Support:

On-site support and supervision are provided by a designated shelter staff member.

Participation in volunteer orientation
Time Commitment:

2 hours a week on-site for a minimum of 6 months
