Ongoing Volunteers - Ongoing Bible Study & Community Development Volunteer

Bible Study & Community Development Group Leader

Volunteers will lead a Bible Study or Community Development/outreach for the women who stay at Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter. The volunteers will prepare the lessons, food, provide bibles and related materials, and lead the group study sessions at a time and in a space designated by the shelter’s staff.  

 

Impact of the volunteer:

This volunteer role is an opportunity for women of faith to bring support and encouragement to women staying at the shelter who desire spiritual growth and who will benefit from the sisterhood of community.

 

Catholic Charities Program Served:

The bible study will occur at Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter which provides ~185 women with emergency shelter and assistance to obtain secure housing, employment, access to healthcare, and community support.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare the 1-hour bible study lessons to be shared
  • Work with Donza Nichols, Client Resource Specialist, to maintain a working schedule of activities
  • Provide a warm welcome and engaging environment for the residents

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Able to comply with the verbal directions of the staff re when and where the bible study occurs

Desired Skills, Experience & Characteristics:

  • Experience leading small group discussions
  • Experience participating in or leading bible study groups
  • Open, warm, kind, and calm manner
  • Able to relate to the women’s life experiences
  • Tolerant of life in the shelter which can occasionally present unpredictable scheduling and behavior from residents

Volunteer Benefits:

  • Volunteers will share their faith, grow in understanding of women who experience homelessness

Volunteers will:

  • Participate in volunteer orientation
  • Be supported while on site by a staff member at the shelter

Time Commitment:

  • 2 hours a week on site at Harriet Tubman
  • Schedule to be set by the shelter staff
  • At least 6 months
