ESOL Instructor Volunteer


Catholic Charities Immigrant Support Services system of integrated services works holistically to address clients’ interconnected needs by providing wrap around social services, employment supportive services and education and training programs in the communities of DC and Gaithersburg.


The ESOL Instructor will teach beginner to intermediate level English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses for adults based on Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) standards. The volunteer will prepare a comprehensive ESOL lesson plan, keep a record of student attendance, and attend trainings.


The ESOL Instructor Volunteers will be responsible for:

  • Teaching workplace English for beginner and advanced learners including reading, speaking, and writing
  • Preparing lesson plans
  • Attending trainings
  • Keeping record of student attendance


Desired Skills, Experience & Characteristics:

  • Able to design and apply lesson plans using the program’s curriculum
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite and internet skills



  • Volunteers must have experience working with the immigrant community
  • Volunteers must be fluent in English
  • Volunteers must have ESOL certification or one year of experience in teaching or working with adults
  • Volunteers must have a minimum of an Associates degree
  • Volunteers must be able to volunteer at a location in Montgomery County, MD

  • The volunteer will receive on-site training at the Immigrant Support Services Center
  • Volunteers will have on-site supervision


Time Commitment:

  • The volunteer will teach 2-4 days a week for 12 weeks – depending on the level and time availability/commitment
  • Classes are offered Tuesdays to Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Gaithersburg Middle School


Locations: Gaithersburg Middle School, 2 Teachers Way, Gaithersburg, MD 20877 

  • Parking is available in front of the facility
  • Also accessible via the DC Metro Rail Red Line (Shady Grove), Bus 57 and/or 55
