Education - Strong Families Initiative Support Group Lead

The Strong Families Initiative program includes a 12-week series of support groups for parents and teens that are led by volunteers. Participants who are teens are separated by gender. This program seeks to improve kids’ communication with their parents.


Strong Families Volunteers will lead support groups for teens or parents for 12 weeks. There will be 2 volunteers per group (there will be no more than 12 people in each group). This curriculum assists teens in transitioning into adulthood, understanding their value, and recognizing the value in fostering community.


Strong Families Volunteers will be responsible for:

  • Leading support group discussions for parents or teens
  • Implementing the once-a-week program based on a curriculum


Desired Skills, Experience & Characteristics:

  • Accepting, patient, willing to share life stories, and dynamic
  • Understands the difficulties of certain groups not feeling accepted, not feeling like they have a home, or finding it difficult to understand what it means to be an adult
  • Lives in Montgomery County (not required, but helpful for commute)



  • All Volunteers must speak Spanish
  • Volunteers leading parent support groups must have experience being a parent
  • Volunteers must be 18 years or older
  • Passing of background check
  • Child protection training

  • Volunteers will receive on-site training at St. Camillus Church, Misión San Andrés (Catholic Charities Center), or St Catherine Laboure
  • Volunteers will have on-site supervision


Time Commitment:

  • Volunteers will serve once a week during weekdays (Monday-Friday), from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Exact day of week depends on the volunteer’s availability
  • Volunteers will serve for at least 12 weeks

  • Parking is available at facilities
  • Also accessible through the DC Metro Rail and Metro bus
