Mock Interviewers @ Catholic Charities Center in Wheaton MD
Volunteers conduct mock interviews with the adult students in the Catholic Charities Bank Teller Certification Program to build their confidence and prepare them for job interviews. The students are primarily speakers of languages other than English and are becoming bilingual since their relatively recent legal immigration to the United States. The students are looking for help preparing for the American-style, English-language interviews so they can get good jobs and support their families.
Catholic Charities Program Served:
The Immigration Support Services program provides people with many types of assistance: job training, job placement, English for Speakers of Other Languages classes, case management to find housing and access resources in the community.
Duties & Responsibilities:
At the workshop, volunteers will:
- receive a briefing from the program staff before the event and a set of questions to use in the interview
- demonstrate an effective interview for the students at the beginning of the event
- conduct 1:1 interviews using questions provided with 2-4 students
- provide written feedback on each interview which the instructor will share with the students later
- participate in a group discussion mid-way through the session to share general feedback and answer questions
Qualifications:
Volunteers must be:
- At least 21 years old
- Previously sought a job by interviewing
- Currently or previously held a job
- Able to follow verbal instructions
- Able to adapt to in-the-moment changes in the planned activity
Desired Skills, Experience & Characteristics:
Volunteers should be:
- Comfortable conducting an interview
- Warm, open, kind and calm in demeanor
- Capable of providing appropriate feedback using a checklist
- Open to and accepting of cultural differences with the interviewees
Support:
Volunteers will receive:
- A briefing from program staff on the goals and procedure for the event
- A set of interview questions
- A feedback form
Time Commitment:
- Be available 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
