Organisation Summary:

The Youth Booth is a 2011 amalgamation of two youth trusts which has 4 key objectives –

1st Object: To enable young people to achieve positive outcomes for themselves by providing support and advocacy.

2nd Object: To promote change in social structure and community attitudes that impact positively on young people.

3rd Object: To promote improvements in the mental, physical, psychological or culture well-being of young people.

4th Object: To provide a safe and supportive environment and resources for individuals, particularly young people, to discover their true identity and develop caring, authentic relationships that enhance their social, spiritual and emotional well-being.  


The volunteers will assist youth workers, helping to supervise young people in a youth centre venue. The Youth Trust is an open house and has the flexibility of organising and coordinating games for the youth at any time. Volunteers will never be alone to supervise youth, a paid youth worker will always be on hand. The volunteers will work will with young people from a strengths-based approach so they can achieve their full potential. They will work to strengthen positive relationships between young people and their whanau.

Key tasks include:

Being on time for youth centre to be opened at 3pm. Make sure centre is ready to be open e.g. open sign out and music on.

Volunteers are expected to be supportive, strength based and advocate for the youth. 

Any disclosures from young person needs to be reported to senior youth worker.

Group leader of activities, fully engaged and eager to communicate well to youth – be a great role model

There will also be occasional roles assisting with the school holiday programmes or one off events – details will be provided at the time by the youth workers.

Time Commitment:

Other than one off events or programmes volunteers should be available for a minimum of six months and are required to volunteer Monday – Friday 3 – 6pm (not every day but a regular time preferred)

Skills required:

Volunteers should be 18yrs +.

Communication skills are the most important but the capacity to be open to talk about all appropriate conversations and withhold from bringing and influencing their own values and beliefs on the youth. Volunteers need to be supportive and positive role models.

Skills gained:

Volunteers will gain considerable insight into the running of a busy youth centre and gain confidence communicating with and enabling young people to realise their potential. It is hoped they will enjoy being part of The Youth Booth and the team of staff, volunteers and young people.
