Emergency Response - Ambulance and Event Volunteers

Organisation Summary:

St John’s mission is to prevent and relieve sickness and injury, and to act to enhance health and well-being of people of all races and creeds anywhere in New Zealand.

St John is a charitable organisation with a volunteer ethos. It operates independently of Government and business, and serves communities throughout New Zealand by delivering an extensive range of services and products in the health and health-related fields. These services and products include:

  • Emergency and non-emergency ambulance services for approximately 90% of New Zealand's population.
  • Emergency care and first aid at public events
  • Friendship and support over the phone to the lonely and the housebound
  • Transport for people to their health appointments
  • First aid training and health-related products and services to the community.
  • Youth Programme for 6 - 18 year olds to learn first aid, health care, self-discipline and general life skills in their communities.

Tasks:

Ambulance & Events Volunteers provide quality care to patients in their local communities. Volunteers give their time to help both at local pre-planned events and by working on the frontline in an emergency ambulance. Ambulance and Event Volunteers are currently being sought across the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes districts. 

Volunteering as both an Ambulance and Events Officer is a big commitment that provides huge rewards. By working on community events and on an ambulance your role is varied, but the focus is always on providing quality care to patients. 

As an Events Volunteer you could be covering anything the Warbirds Over Wanaka to the Queenstown Marathon as well as international and local sports events, to school fairs or music events. Our Ambulance Volunteers provide care and support to our patients through their journey which may start at a 111 call and end either being referred to another health care provider, treated on scene, or transported to a medical facility.
 
Time Commitment:
 
A minimum commitment of one year is usually required.
 
• Once accepted, your online and classroom training will take around six to nine months to complete.
• Volunteers should be available for regular duty and training (approximately two 12 hour shifts, one event and two training session per month).
 
Located in Wanaka, Queenstown, Alexandra, Cromwell and all surrounding areas.

Without question, you will be trustworthy and reliable, able to display excellent communication skills (written and oral), have great time management and be computer literate.

You will also need:

• A full and clean NZ driver's licence for at least 12 months or have completed an approved NZTA advanced driving course (if full licence held for less than 12 months).
• 18 years of age or over.
• New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status.
• Clean Police record.
• Pass the St John assessment requirements (physical, interview, literacy/numeracy test).
• Pass pre-employment drug screening.

Skills Gained:

Our Ambulance & Events volunteers go through a rigorous recruitment process to ensure they have the skills and physical capability to do the job. Once on board they receive full driving, risk management and medical training before they are able to volunteer at events and as part of an ambulance crew. Our volunteers continue their development by attending regular training and receive full ongoing support in the role.
