Community Involvement - Community Support Volunteer - Varied Roles

Organisation Summary;

Happiness House Community Support Centre (HH) was created in 1991 by Pat Bird, a local Wakatipu woman.  Pat identified a need for some kind of support for families and individuals that were being left ‘behind’ in a fast growing and quite isolated community. HH was formed as a support centre, set in a home like environment in a privately rented property which people could come to and have comfort and assistance.

She started with a ‘soup’ type kitchen so over the winter months there was always warm food available to clients.  She then set about gathering second hand clothes, bedding, anything that could be distributed to those in need in the community.

HH continues to provide an open, warm, friendly and confidential environment.  Between the hours of 10am-4pm Monday and 9am-4pm Tuesday to Friday anyone can gather and enjoy our community support centre in the same home like setting that Pat Bird created all those years ago.  A selection of our group activities are; Knitting Group, Frisbee Golf, Gardening Group, Music Group and a Craft Group. 

Tasks:

Volunteer tasks are varied and will depend on your skills and interests. 

We have a small Op Shop which needs constant attention - this involves putting out new clothes and making sure everything is presented well. We have a garden on site that provides produce for our produce day on Friday. This requires constant attention over the summer months and soil preparation during winter. We also have lawns to be mowed and general maintenance of our property. We also organise craft sessions for individuals and children during holidays. If you are proficient in a particular craft and are able to assist in craft activities this can be very rewarding. In a nut shell roles include:

  • Op Shop sorting
  • Gardening
  • Craft groups
  • Making meals for freezing
  • Cleaning
  • Chatting with HH visitors

Time Commitment:
 
Depending on the role volunteers undertake the time commitment varies from a one off offer of help, to a regular on going commitment on a weekly basis. Staff are happy to discuss potential roles with you to suit your availability.
 
Skills Required:
 
Skills required will vary depending on the role. Volunteers in roles that involve communicating with members of the community will require an open mind and non-judgmental outlook. Volunteers should be happy talking to people from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities. Volunteers should also be mindful of confidentiality at all times and work well under supervision.
 
Skills Gained:
 
Volunteers will receive in house training with existing staff members and supervision offered if required within the role. Volunteers will have the opportunity to develop their communication and listening skills, gain an insight into the running of a busy support centre, meet people from a range of backgrounds and gain pleasure and satisfaction from their involvement in Happiness House.
