Buddy for Chinese Seniors - Richmond

The Intergrated Community Services for Seniors is an information hub designed to support Chinese speaking seniors to age at home by connecting them to culturally appropriate health and social services in Richmond. We are currently looking for volunteers who can speak Cantonese OR Mandarin OR bilingual (English and Cantonese OR Mandarin) to buddy with seniors in the city of Richmond who may experience social isolation or difficulty using public transit to medical appointments. 

Work Location: Mainly within the city of Richmond, occasionally to Vancouver for medical appointments

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend orientation and training  
  • Friendly phone calls to seniors to provide emotional support
  • Friendly visit to seniors at home or in hospice to provide emotional support
  • Meet up, walk, drive or ride with seniors to and from medical clinics or hospital on public transit, HandyDART, or volunteer's vehicle
  • Keep seniors company during the appointment or wait for them
  • Simple English and Chinese translation when required
  • Report any concerns to the Project Lead or delegate

 

Time Commitment and Schedule:   

 
  • Based on seniors' request and volunteer availability

  

Qualifications Required: 

  • Criminal Record Check Clearance 
  • Fluent in conversational Cantonese or Mandarin, Intermediate English Level
  • 19 years or older 
  • Be reachable on a cell phone during the shift

Optional:

  • Driving license class 5 and a vehicle with ICBC Premium Third Party Liability insurance

  • Maintain confidentiality and boundaries

  

Orientation and Training Provided: 

  • General orientation to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and the position 
  • On-the-job training
