Programmatic - Apple Program Leader/Assistant
Do you know coding, graphic art, or music creation using apple apps and want to share your skills? Want to help local students reach academic success? San José Public Library is looking for Apple users to host coding and creation programs. Here are the already created program types:
Everyone Can Code: Introduction to Swift Playgrounds
Get started with Swift, the language used to create apps and programs for iOS and macOS. Participants will be introduced to the Swift Playgrounds app and walk through a simple coding lesson on the iPad.
Everyone Can Code: Sphero [EDU, Arcade, Pong, etc.]
Learn the basics of Sphero to set you up for success in building fun games. Learn to roll, aim, control the LEDs, change heading, and detect collisions. Once you have the basics down, you can recreate classic games with a Sphero while learning the basics of game design. You’ll build your very own robotic renditions of some famous games like Pong. Students will be introduced to coding and robotics using the iPad and Sphero robots.
Everyone Can Create: Beginning Animation
Learn how to make simple animations with doodles and shapes. Participants will be introduced to the FlipaClip app and walk through a simple animation lesson on the iPad.
Everyone Can Create: Emoji Art
Have you ever wanted to create your own emojis or word art? With the Tayasui Sketches iPad app, you can learn to draw with different mediums like water color, color pencil, and more in order to turn your real-life facial expressions into your own emoji, as well as to create beautiful word art.
Everyone Can Create: Let’s Make Logos!
Kids in grades 3-5 will learn to think like a graphic designer! Kids will be able to brainstorm, design, and create their very own logo. We will have a series of activities to help them throughout the process, including some exposure to Tayasui Sketches. This is a fun class where students will be able to bring their imagination and ideas to life, all while learning how to use the app Keynotes on the iPad and to use good design principles.
Everyone Can Create: Mini Music Makers
Using the wonders of GarageBand, Mini Music Makers teaches students about creating a live loop grid using pre-recorded Loops whether it's from the sample or one of the Sound packs available for free on the iPad. Students may record their own songs based on the way they proceed to use their live loop grid as well as record their own loops with the various instruments available to them. We will also teach them how to edit their loops and add effects to their loops to vary the sound made.
Everyone Can Create: Let’s Make Movie Posters!
Students will be able to brainstorm, design, and create their own movie posters. Students will learn about color theory and design harmony to recreate famous movie posters or design their own original movie using the Tayasui Sketches app on the iPad.
Everyone Can Create: Stop Motion Animation
Join us for an interactive animation lab series! Participants will learn basic animation skills, concepts, and create their own short clips using the Stop Motion Studio app on the iPad.
How You Will Make a Difference
Volunteers help connect youth and adults with knowledge of Apple apps. You will be helping the San José community learn a new and in-demand skill set by providing lesson plans and in-person instruction. Classroom management experience is a plus, but volunteers will be trained in this area by library staff.
Volunteers are needed to:
- Use pre-created lesson plans or create their own lessons with apple apps
- Lead and instruct meetings to teach how to use the apps
- Work with a library staff to review lesson plans and manage participants
- Have basic skills for conducting in-person meetings with SJPL staff support
Benefits
- Encourage lifelong learning to community youth and adults
- Connect with your community and provide a desired service
- Share or gain experience with program management skills
- Develop mentoring and instruction skills
- Gain experience in training others and working with youth and adults
Commitment:
- Scheduled Mondays: 3:30-5:30pm (check the schedule and sign-up/show-up to what you can (you'll need to know/learn the app & lesson plan ahead of time, this is logged volunteer hours as well)
