Partners in Reading, San Jose Public Library

Literacy/Education - Partners in Reading Volunteer Tutor Orientation (In-Person) March 13, 2024

Volunteer With Partners in Reading

Partners in Reading (PAR), the adult literacy program of the San Jose Public Library, needs Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) volunteer tutors.

Make a difference in an adult learner’s life by volunteering twice a week to help build skills so they can function more confidently at home, at work, and as a member of the San José community.

ABE learners can converse in English but read or write below the high school level. They work on building basic reading, writing, and technology skills. They are from all over the world, including from the United States.

ESL learners work on building basic conversation skills so they can help their children in school, get better jobs, and possibly move to the adult literacy part of the program.

The adult learners come to Partners in Reading with a host of skills and for many reasons, but they all want to become more independent.

You can help by making a minimum 6-month commitment to assist an individual with basic conversation, or reading, writing, and technology skills. Tutoring will change your life, too!
