Programmatic - Bilingual Reader to Children (Chinese)
Do you love reading aloud and wish to spread the joy of reading to children? San José Public Library is looking for bilingual volunteers to read to young children. Can you read in Chinese? We would love to have your skills to have an evening program. Other languages such as Spanish and Vietnamese are already being meet.
How You Will Make a Difference
Sharing books with children demonstrates that reading is enjoyable and establishes a pattern of lifelong reading and learning.
Volunteers are needed to:
- Select age-appropriate books for reading aloud
- Understand how to search the SJPL catalog for titles
- Read aloud to individual children or a small group of children once a for 30-60 minutes

Commitment/Schedule
Willingness to volunteer at least once a week for a 6-month duration. Seeking a evening volunteer. The day will dependent on the availability of the volunteer.
Prospective volunteers should:
- Be comfortable engaging with youth and families
- Have strong oral communication skills
- Be dependable, patient and flexible
- Complete a fingerprint background check, at no cost to you. Only required if you are 18 years or older
Language Skills
- Bilingual skills are highly desired, but not required
Qualifications Required
- Age Must be at least 18+
- Oral and written communication skills in Chinese Must be at least Medium
- Oral and written communication skills in English Must be at least Medium
- Reading to Children Training Completed Must be Yes
