Programmatic - Reading Buddies

Position Overview:

 

Teen volunteers Help children in Kindergarten through third grade develop their reading skills by being an active listener as they read aloud to you at the library.  Sharing books with children demonstrates that reading is entertaining and important and establishes a pattern of lifelong reading and learning.
East Branch Reading Buddies sessions  are currently on Saturdays from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

·Listen to individual children read aloud for one hour in the children’s area of the library.  Each child will read for about 10 – 15 minutes.

  •         Earn community service hours as you volunteer.

 

Training/Support Available:

 

  •  Receive one hour of training from a librarian including:
  • Tips on selecting books for children of all ages, interests, and backgrounds
  • Strategies for working effectively with children and active listening
  • Ongoing support from a designated staff member

Qualifications:

 

·   Responsible, dependable

·   Strong reading and oral communication skills

·    Patience and willingness to work with young children

One Hour Training must be completed before you may begin this volunteering, so contact East Branch librarians after you sign up so we can schedule your training.

·     Bilingual readers desired, but not required

·     13-14 year olds must be active in teensReach before attending Reading Buddies training. For those 15+, teensReach participation is strongly encouraged, but not required.

 

 

 

Commitment:

 

Two hours per month for a minimum of six months

 

 

         

 

 

Qualifications Required

  • Age Must be at least 13+
  • Oral communication and written skills in English Must be at least Medium
  • Reading Buddies Training completed Must be Reading Buddies training completed
