Digital Skill Building Pathways Program Facilitator

What are digital skills?

Digital skills means knowing how to use technology to: find information, communicate, create, and solve problems.

How You Will Make a Difference

With SJPL's Digital Skill Building Pathways, you can help others learn and practice skills that are essential to living and working in the digital world.

You will be an important part of enhancing the library’s ability to offer quality STEAM programming to Silicon Valley students. Coding exposes students of all ages to new learning opportunities, and builds skills that reinforce academic success; skills like creativity, risk-taking, collaboration, and the idea that learning is a process rather than a product. Classroom management experience is a plus but volunteers will have training in this area by library staff.

Volunteers are needed to:

  • Set up the program area
  • Provide instruction consistent with the program format and provided curriculum
  • Communicate regularly with staff about scheduling and program
  • Assist with promotional efforts for the program

Benefits

  • Encourage lifelong learning to community adults
  • Connect with your community and provide a desired service
  • Share or gain experience with program management skills
  • Develop mentoring skills
  • Gain experience in training others and working with peers

Commitment/Schedule

Schedule is dependent on the availability of the volunteer.

  • Once a month, lead a lesson using curriculum from SJPL's Digital Skill Building Pathways
    • Time commitment: 2-4 hours per program (1-2 hours of training/prep, 1-2 hours of instruction.)
    • SJPL encourages Bilingual volunteers to apply
  • SJPL is also open to volunteer created curricula. We ask however that learning objective, basic lesson plans and requirements be shared with SJPL so that we may properly recruit students for the program.

Prospective volunteers should:

  • Be comfortable with computers/tech
  • Attend volunteer orientation at the branch in which you lead classes
  • Have experience or comfort with working with library patrons of varying ages, backgrounds and skill levels
  • Review course materials prior to class meeting
  • Complete a fingerprint background check, at no cost to you.
