Programmatic - English Language Learner Conversation Club Facilitator

 

Facilitate an English Language Learner Conversation Club at Alum Rock branch library. The goal of the ELL Conversation Club is to create an opportunity for “zero to very beginner-level" English language learners to practice their English conversation skills in an inclusive and welcoming environment. 

How You Will Make a Difference 

  • Boost confidence and English language competence in program participants 

Volunteers are needed to: 

  • Facilitate a safe space for English language learners to build community and improve their conversation skills in English  

  • Share information about library services, programs, and use of resources

  • Learn ways to promote learning and refine teaching skills  

Commitment/Schedule 

  • At least one hour-long class session plus preparation time per week for a minimum of six months. 

A fingerprint background check, at no cost to you, is required. 

Volunteers will receive training and support to ensure they are well-prepared for their role. 

Prospective volunteers should: 

  • Have experience in working with non-English-speaking adults 

  • Have knowledge and experience in the field of English language learning or a related discipline 

  • Have strong oral communication skills 

  • Be dependable, patient, and flexible 

Language Skills 

  • Advanced fluency in English is required 

  • Working proficiency in any other language than English is desired 

  • The most commonly spoken languages (other than English) by Alum Rock Library patrons are Spanish and Vietnamese 

Qualifications Required

  • Age Must be at least 15+
  • Online Orientation for On-site Volunteers Completed Must be Yes
  • Oral and written communication skills in English Must be at least High
  • Oral and written communication skills in Spanish Must be at least Medium
