Programmatic - Reading Buddies
Reading Buddies provides students in grades K-3 with an opportunity to improve their reading skills by working one-on-one with a reading coach. Reading Buddies creates a positive reading experience for beginning and developing readers and helps children build confidence as readers. Our reading coach, who is a teen volunteer, will listen to children read and provide support in phonics, sight words, and comprehension. Students can bring their favorite book or choose from the available selection at the Alviso Branch Library to read aloud to their reading coach.
Assigned Volunteers are expected to fulfill this assignment on a regular schedule which can be determined with the Children's Librarian at the Alviso Branch Library. For example, the volunteer can schedule once a week on Saturdays for up to 2 hours or every other week on a Wednesday. Qualifications Required
- Age Must be at least 13+
- Oral and written communication skills in English Must be at least High
- Reading to Children Training Completed Must be Yes
- Staff Training: Orientation for Staff working with Volunteers Completed Must be Yes
