Adult Literacy - Tutor for High School Equivalency Exam Students
Tutoring is an incredibly rewarding way to give back! A tutor's role is often as a coach and helping their assigned learner believe in their academic abilities.
HSE tutors work one-on-one with an adult learner who is preparing for the High School Equivalency Exam (GED or HiSET). Learners are at different levels, some of which are at an elementary school literacy level.
Tutors are matched with learners with needs in subject areas that the tutor has confidence in teaching.
Qualifications include:
- Able to help their learner in subject areas most important to the learner
- Familiarization with the GED.com test site and test expectations
- Monthly reporting of time and student progress
- Able to meet with the learner for a 45-minute session each week, and a minimum commitment of 3 months
- High school completion or equivalent
- Have or willing to get DCL library card
Training and support will be provided:
- 2.5 hour orientation and training (held the second Thursdays of each month from 4-6:30 pm)
- Adult Literacy Volunteer Handbook
- Optional training and professional development opportunities
- Support by the Literacy & Community Outreach Specialist
Volunteers may meet their students at any branch, public space, or virtually.
