Library Events & Programs - Bark for Books Certified Dog Handler

We are currently looking for certified therapy dog & human teams. Volunteers and their pups must be fully licensed and insured therapy teams.

Reading aloud can be RUFF for kids. Bark for Books helps budding and struggling readers build confidence and self-esteem by reading out loud to trained therapy dogs without the stress of being judged.  Your job as a certified therapy team is simply to be present for your therapy dog, and make sure the environment is safe for the children to read. In general, volunteers come on a monthly basis for 1.5 hours at a time--meeting 6 children for 15 minutes each. You do not help the children with their reading, unless they specifically ask a question. Family members are allowed to meet you and the dog, but only the registered child is allowed to stay with you and your dog during the reading. We do require a background check, which we will administer.

Current schedule needs: 2nd Thursday, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm and the 3rd Monday, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Once you register, we will reach out to schedule an interview and discuss next steps.

For questions about this program, please contact Shay Shanahan, Youth & Family Services Librarian, sshanahan@dclibraries.org.

If you need to cancel, please do so at least 4 days in advance to allow us time to find another volunteer to fill this important spot.
