Literacy & Outreach

Interested in making a difference in the life of someone who has English as their Second Language (ESL)? Your guidance can help them to gain confidence while also adjusting to American culture.

ESL tutors provide a vital service by helping an adult in a one-on-one setting with learning or improving their English language skills. Some adults are seeking help to prepare for the Citizenship test or a high school equivalency exam (HSE).

Volunteers may meet their learners at a library branch, any public space, or virtually.

Qualifications include:

• Able to help their learner in subject areas most important to the learner
• Monthly reporting of time and student progress
• Able to meet a minimum of 45 minutes each week
• Minimum commitment of 3 months
• High school completion or equivalent
• Have or willing to get a DCL library card

Training and support will be provided:

• 2.5 hour orientation and training (held the second Thursdays of each month from 4-6:30 pm)
• Adult Literacy Volunteer Handbook
• Optional training and professional development opportunities
• Support by the Literacy & Community Outreach Specialist
• Access to library space

Volunteer tutors will report their student contact time, planning, and additional training/development time on a monthly basis.
