This volunteer opportunity will help to maintain and improve the quality of life and wellbeing of our residents by keeping our gardens and outside areas beautiful, safe and accessible.
This volunteer opportunity will help residents live life in all its fullness by helping to nurture the natural landscape and gardens that our residents can enjoy the outdoors within. The physical activity, mental stimulation and even social interaction that stems from being outside is a valuable part of our residents day and the care provided.

Avalon Aged Care is a sixty-bed residential aged care facility located in the heart of Emerald. Our ultimate goal is for residents to live in an environment that feels like home, and maintaining our gardens is a vital part of this. Our grounds are extensive; therefore, there are opportunities for varied roles as a Garden Guru, including as a Hedging Hero, Watering Wizard and Landscaping Legend. These roles are well suited for an enthusiastic person who loves to spend time in the garden and is looking to make a difference in people's lives in their community.

Roles and tasks involved include:
▪️ Trim and prune Avalon's many hedges using a range of gardening equipment
▪️ Clear any debris left on pathways and in gardens
▪️ Water Avalon's extensive collection of potted plants
▪️ Remove any weeds growing in pots
▪️ Hose of concrete around potted plants
▪️ Assist maintenance officer with maintaining and updating our gardens
▪️ Apply pesticides to remove harmful insects such as mosquitos, wasps, and ticks
▪️ Conduct general maintenance duties such as cleaning walkways
▪️ Trim and edge around walks, flower beds and walls
▪️ Plant new decorative bushes, flowers, plants and shrubs
▪️ Remove weeds and dead plants as needed to preserve the health and natural beauty of the plants
▪️ Trim overgrown limbs and leaves to ensure an appealing look to the area
All Garden Guru's:
▪️ Have positive interactions with residents
▪️ Report any concerns to staff immediately
This is a great opportunity to:

Shift times are flexible and will be negotiated to suit volunteer availability
Any day of the week (Morning, Afternoon)
Time Commitment: Minimum time commitment of 1-2 hours monthly
▪️ General interest in gardening
▪️ Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively
▪️ Friendly, polite and patient manner
▪️ Follow health and safety procedures (training provided)
▪ Influenza Vaccination
▪ Working with children
▪ NDIS Workers Screening check
▪ National Police check
