Community Council - Community Council - Advocacy Chair

Responsibilities Include:

  • In collaboration with provincial office and branch manager, developing and implementing an annual advocacy plan for the branch
  • Recruiting, orientating and managing Community Outreach Ambassador volunteers to assist with program delivery at the local level
  • Attending community events on behalf of the BC SPCA
  • In consultation with the provincial office, liaising with local government on relevant animal welfare issues
  • Reporting regularly on activities to the Community Council and provincial office


  • Ability to operate professionally in a non-profit environment
  • Experience working in the public sector an asset
  • Contact within and knowledge of local government an asset
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Public speaking and presentation experience
  • Experience leading projects from initiation to completion

Time Commitment:

  • Approximately 10 hours per month, including prep work for and attendance at Community Council meetings and branch events
  • Minimum one year term, two preferred

Requirements for the Position:

  • 19 years of age or older
  • Must be a member of the BC SPCA ($30)
  • Complete an online volunteer application 
  • Complete an interview with the Community Council or with the branch manager in the absence of a Community Council
  • Attend a governance presentation within three months of accepting the position
