Description
Food services is an integral part of seniors programs at recreation centres. Food Service Assistants play an important role in the operation of this service.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with food preparation
- Provide customer service
- Serve meals
- Maintain food service area (kitchen and eating areas) by keeping it clean and organized
- Operate commercial grade dishwasher, if required
- Clean up tables in eating areas and transport dishes, cups and cutlery to kitchen for cleaning
- Liaise and communicate with staff about questions, concerns, and/or requests.
- Assist with food inventory management
Report and Support
Volunteers in this position report to and are supported by recreation centre staff that may include Coordinators, Programmers, Kitchen Lead, Clerk and Front Desk Attendants. Orientation/Training will be provided by City of Surrey staff.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Able to perform physical tasks
- Knowledge of food preparation in a commercial kitchen environment
- Effective communication skills
- Able to multitask, maintain a calm demeanor, and work accurately in a busy environment
- Able to work well both independently and as part of a team
- Able to accept supervision and direction
- Friendly and helpful attitude
Preferred Experience
- Experience in food preparation and customer service
- Food Safe certification an asset but not required
Locations
City of Surrey recreation facilities - various locations
Time Commitment
- Typically, morning or afternoon shifts, some occasional evenings, or weekends for special events. Both short-term and long-term opportunities are available.

Step #1 – Eligibility Requirements
To apply to be a volunteer in the Adult and Senior Services volunteer program, you must be:
- 14 years or older
- Eligible to volunteer in Canada (check your travel documents, if applicable)
Step #2 – Apply
- Fill in an application
- Attend an interview
- Submit two (2) references
- Complete a Police Information Check
Step #3 – Volunteer
- When all the above steps have been completed, you will be contacted by phone or email by an Adult and Senior Services program administrator.
This process can take up to 6 weeks so we thank you for your diligence and patience. Once you are eligible to volunteer, log-in to your profile at MyImpactPage.com to search and sign up for volunteer activities, confirm shifts and record your hours of service.
