City of Surrey - Friends of the Forest

Surrey Youth Stewardship Squad (SYSS) (Ages 13-18) - SYSS Member

Surrey Youth Stewardship Squad (SYSS) is for high-school youth ages 13-18.

SYSS is a platform for youth to take action on environmental issues. We restore and enhance our urban forest, advocate for our environment at community events, and grow a community of young leaders who care for nature.

What we do:

  • Remove invasive plants like Himalayan Blackberry and English Ivy
  • Plant native trees and shrubs each spring and fall
  • Attend community events to help teach people about Surrey's urban forest
  • Participate in environmental stewardship projects
  • Assist with environmental-themed virtual webinars and presentations

How you will grow:

  • Join a community of like-minded youth to take environmental action
  • Gain experience in a supportive team environment
  • Earn volunteer hours and outdoor field experience with hands-on work
  • Learn about local ecology and environmental stewardship

Requirements:

  • 13 – 18 years old (in high school)
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • 1-5 hours for each activity. There are usually 2-4 activities per month in the spring, summer, and fall.
