WALKit Activity - WALKit Activity Assistant

Volunteer Position Overview

Volunteers in this position play an active role in engaging 55+ participants and providing a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience in WALKit activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greet participants as they arrive and create a welcoming and inclusive environment throughout the activity 
  • Walk at the back, middle, or the front of the group to ensure all the participants feel supported and included 
  • Assist staff in monitoring and meeting the needs of participants with various abilities 
  • Initiate conversations with new or returning participants  
  • Support participants if and when staff is attending or responding to emergency situations 
  • Assist participants in using the WALKit web-based map 
  • Provide feedback to staff on walking routes 

 

Location/Working Condition 

Outdoors at various locations and weather-related elements such as rainy or windy conditions 

Report and Support

Volunteers in this position report to and are supported by the City of Surrey staff. Orientation/Training will be provided by staff member(s). 

Volunteer Apparel

Volunteers will be required to wear the City of Surrey volunteer apparel, volunteer ID, reflective vest and safety gear as needed 

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and Experience

  • Able to walk outdoors for approximately 90 minutes 
  • Interested in and comfortable with interacting with older adults 
  • Enthusiastic team player  
  • Strong communication skills 
  • Able to multitask while talking with participants and monitoring any changes in walking pace 
  • Friendly and helpful attitude 
  • Experience in customer service is an asset

Step #1 – Eligibility Requirements

 

To apply to the Age Friendly volunteer program, you must be:

  • 14 years or older
  • Eligible to volunteer in Canada (check your travel documents, if applicable)

 

 Step #2 – Apply

 

  • Fill in an application
  • Attend an interview
  • Submit 2 references
  • Complete a Police Information Check

 

 Step #3 – Volunteer

 

  • When all the above steps have been completed, you will be contacted by phone or email by an Age Friendly program administrator

 


This process can take up to 6 weeks so we thank you for your diligence and patience. Once you are eligible to volunteer, log-in to your profile at MyImpactPage.com to search and sign up for volunteer activities, confirm shifts and record your hours of service.
