The Adult/55+ Services offers a wide range of opportunities for volunteers of all ages to engage adults in the community and in turn, enrich each other’s lives.

Volunteer Opportunities

English Conversation Program (ECP) Volunteer Facilitator - The English Conversation Program offers a positive and welcoming environment for people from diverse culture and background to practice English and meet others in the community. With the support from the Diversity and Inclusion staff team, volunteer facilitators design program materials and facilitate learning and interactions.

Skills/Experience

  • Passionate about working with and learning from people of diverse cultures and background.
  • Committed to create and facilitate a welcoming and inclusive environment and promoting positive experience for program participants.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Leadership skills and experience working in group setting.
  • Have a solid understanding of communication strategies with program participants.
  • Fluent in Canadian English in spoken and written forms. Previous experience in teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) would be an asset. Familiar with Canadian idiomatic expressions, culture, etc.
  • Creativity, resourcefulness, and willingness to learn.

 

Tasks Includes

  • Prepare for each session using the research materials provided by Diversity and Inclusion team and/or other resources.
  • Promote a positive, welcoming and inclusive environment for program participants.
  • Collaborate with co-facilitator in session planning and leading sessions.
  • Assess needs of participants on ongoing basis and adapt to meet the needs of participants.
  • Initiate and facilitate conversations during each session with participants.
  • Attend English Conversation Program Orientation to be informed about roles and responsibilities, communication procedures and up-to-date information and standards of the program. Digital literacy is required to facilitate virtual sessions, if applicable.
  • Abide by the City of Surrey Code of Conduct.
  • Respect and follow the guidelines of Privacy and Records policy.
  • Report volunteer service hours and class attendance through City of Surrey volunteer website using your MyImpactPage.com 

 

Location

  • Surrey Public Libraries (various locations)
  • Microsoft Teams (virtual sessions)

 

Time Commitment

  • Time: either morning or evening session
  • Hours: 1.5 hours/session, 8 sessions per season plus preparation time

Step #1 – Eligibility Requirements

 

To apply to be a volunteer in the English Conversation Program, you must be:

  • 18 years or older
  • Eligible to volunteer in Canada (check your travel documents, if applicable)

 

 Step #2 – Apply

 

  • Fill in an application
  • Attend an interview
  • Submit two (2) references
  • Complete a Police Information Check

 

 Step #3 – Volunteer

 

  • When all the above steps have been completed, you will be contacted by phone or email by the Volunteer Resources Team.

 


This process can take up to 6 weeks so we thank you for your diligence and patience. Once you are eligible to volunteer, log-in to your profile at MyImpactPage.com to search and sign up for volunteer activities, confirm shifts and record your hours of service.
