Emergency Preparedness

Attend festivals, community gatherings or large events where we have been invited to set up a booth or give a presentation about how to become prepared to withstand the impact of a major emergency.  This gives the public tools and resources to support themselves and others should help not be available due to the magnitude and impact of the event. We live in an earthquake prone area and in the last few years we have seen an increase in frequency of many different types of emergencies.   

What we do:

• Pick up the resources needed from Fire Hall 1 depending on the event and set up a table to engage the public. We have brochures, games, give-aways, signs and dress-up firefighting gear to attract the public. Qualified volunteers can use a community services van to travel to and from the event
• Engage with the public and educate them on the steps they can take to be prepared and self-sufficient for 72 hours to a week
• Provide informational brochures if the resident needs more information

Requirements:

• Working in teams
• Comfortable engaging with the public
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Ability to take initiative and work without supervision
• Be trustworthy, kind, and inclusive of others
• Dress appropriately while representing the Fire Service

Time Commitment:

Booth events at public events can be 3-4 hours long.  The full day events are broken into 2 shifts.  The presentations can be 30 mins to 1 hour including a question/answer period. It can be delivered in person or virtually on zoom meetings.  These are year-round events of which volunteers are expected to donate some of their time.

Location:

Volunteers meet at the beginning and end of each shift at Fire Hall 1 located at 8767 132 street.  There they will find the Community Engagement van filled with event resources needed to complete the event.  At the same location is a volunteer room with additional resources if needed.  Further details are provided on event sign up.

Volunteers who donate their time to the Surrey Fire Service participate in opportunities designed to reduce community risk by delivering life safety messages. Our goal is to educate the public and support their ability to be resilient by knowing more about their risks and what they can do to protect themselves, their family, and their neighbours.
