"Welcome to Recreation" Host - Welcome to Recreation Host


The "Welcome to Recreation" Host helps to create an inclusive and supportive environment to welcome new patrons at the City of Surrey recreation centres. Volunteers in this position play an important role to welcome patrons, proactively engage new patrons and support them to find suitable programs or services through positive interactions. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Provide a welcoming, supportive experience for patrons who are new to recreation services by offering a warm welcome and positive interactions 
  • Develop an understanding of the patron’s interests and goals, suggest suitable programs/services and encourage participation  
  • Provide information of Adult/55+ programs and services and a tour of the facility, if applicable 
  • Connect patrons with staff to register or answer further questions 

Report and Support

Volunteers in this position report to and are supported by recreation centre staff that may include Coordinators, Programmers, Clerk and Front Desk Attendants. Orientation/Training will be provided by City of Surrey staff

Volunteer Apparel 

Accepted volunteers will receive City of Surrey volunteer apparel including a vest and T-shirt. Volunteers are required to wear the apparel while on duty.

  • Some knowledge of Surrey Recreation programs and services
  • Other language skills in addition to English is an asset 

Education and Experience 

  • Experience in customer service
  • Experienced participating in City of Surrey Adult/55+ programs and services is an asset
  • Experience participating in recreation, sport, health and fitness activities
  • Understanding of physical literacy is an asset 

Commitment Expectation

One 2-hour shift per week

To apply to be a volunteer, you must be:

  • 14 years or older
  • Eligible to volunteer in Canada (check your travel documents, if applicable)

  • Fill in an application
  • Attend an interview
  • Submit 2 references
  • Complete a Police Information Check


 Step #3 – Volunteer


  • When all the above steps have been completed, you will be contacted by phone or email by an Adult/55+ volunteer program administrator


This process can take up to 6 weeks so we thank you for your diligence and patience. Once you are eligible to volunteer, log-in to your profile at to search and sign up for volunteer activities, confirm shifts and record your hours of service.
