Emergency Social Services On-Call Reception Centre Responder

 Time Commitment

  • This is an on-call position
  • Quick response indicating availability when contacted for an event required
  • Operational shifts range from 4 to 8 hours max per day until demobilization [occasional,  hours based on event  magnitude]
  • Required ESS Training: 3 online or in-person modules through the Justice Institute of B.C. [JIBC], takes approximately 3 hours each


  • Effective communication skills
  • Productive team player with the ability to empathize with members of public
  • Flexible and adaptable
  • Multi-tasking and organizational skills
  • First Aid and Food Safe training are assets


  • No previous experience required, but experience with a municipal emergency preparedness program or similar is a benefit


  • Provide for immediate needs of people affected by an emergency through roles including: Registration, Referrals, Pet Care, Multicultural Services, Meet and Greet, and On-Site Goods Distribution
  • Help direct evacuees to appropriate services
  • Respect the privacy of evacuees

Program Locations

  • Volunteers are designated to one or more of the six Surrey Town Centres
  • Duties cross-over to other locations depending on event magnitude and program needs

Orientation & Training

On assignment, trained volunteers are provided with a brief onsite orientation to ensure they are comfortable in their roles.  It is required that volunteers take some ESS training before disaster strikes.
