Fire Hydrant Painting - Fire Hydrant Painting

Thank you for your interest in painting fire hydrants for the City of Mesa Fire and Medical Department!

Painted fire hydrants provide higher visibility for fire crews when responding to fires and also improve the aesthetics to neighborhoods.  Having volunteers paint hydrants allows fire department members to continue to attend to their duties such as business inspections, pre-plans, public safety presentations as well as responding to fire and medical emergencies.  Having volunteers paint hydrants provides significant cost-savings to our City.

Plan ahead!  A minimum of 4 weeks notice is required.

Each project typically involves painting approximately 150 – 200 fire hydrants within an assigned city block.

The following will provide you an idea of what will be required of you to complete this task:

  • Meet with your Mesa Fire and Medical Department representative to discuss project details, schedule project date, and receive your assigned painting area.
  • Gather 4-7 groups/crews to assist (3-4 people with at least 1 adult per group/crew).
  • Secure wire brushes and bristle paint brushes (3 ½ - 4 inches) for each group/crew.
  • Secure rags and 5 gallon buckets (1 bucket per group/crew).
  • Make and provide 2 ft. x 4 ft. cardboard templates with cutout to place around the base of the hydrants while painting (recommend at least 2 templates per group/crew).
  • Provide plastic or other form of protection for each group/crew to avoid paint drips in volunteer vehicles.
  • Conduct an "orientation" with groups/crews to review instructions.
  • Divide area and supplies among all groups/crews.
  • Track the progress of your group/crews and maintain quality control.

The Mesa Fire and Medical Department will provide the following supplies:

  • Paint and thinner.
  • Safety vests.
  • Map(s) of area needing hydrants painted.
