Mesa Family Advocacy Center/ Criminal Investigations Division - Criminal Investigations Assistant

 

PURPOSE:                        To assist Detectives and Police Investigators in the follow-up of cases concerning crimes against persons/property.

  

DESCRIPTION:                  Volunteers may assist by collecting surveillance videos and small property items from local businesses, running computer checks (may include LEJIS, RMS, DMS, lab requests, etc.), requesting various information from multiple sources to assist investigations, Rule 15 (taking audio/DVD’s from Evidence and making copies), assisting with preparation of COMPSTAT information, case redactions, preparation of photo line-ups, preparing Intel packets for detectives, taking items out of Evidence for detectives, follow-up telephone contact with victims to provide detective contact information and clarify missing information (such as serial numbers, etc.), reviewing cases and submitting and following up on needed lab requests (DNA/NIBIN/AFIS), entering NARC Hotlines Tips in database, and related administrative/clerical duties. Other related duties will be requested as needed. Duties will vary depending upon location of CIU assignment.

  

QUALIFICATIONS:            Ability to follow through without close supervision. Clerical skills, telephone skills, and computer skills. Ability to become trained in use of digital recorders, digital copying equipment, and photocopiers. Accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to professionally interact with diverse personalities and professionally represent the Mesa Police Department to the public. (Some Detective Assistant positions may require volunteer to be TOC-certified. Some may also require volunteer to drive a department vehicle.)

 

  

TRAINING:                         Volunteer will receive on-the-job training.

 

  

TIME COMMITMENT:        One four-hour shift per week or every other week; varies according to project.

 

  

RESPONSIBLE TO:           Area assigned P.I.A., Detective or Sergeant
